Self Evaluation

1. I used a lot of different materials and processes, from pen and pencil to graphite sticks and tea. I really enjoyed using watercolour and ink most of all. I did do some explorations in the first lesson using my homemade tools, but I didn't really enjoy that and after a while, they did fall apart. It was interesting to explore different mark-making through these tools, however, and it definitely helped me be more inventive with my zine. I did mind map my work, but I find it simply creates too many ideas for me that I then have trouble narrowing down, whereas using the zine really helped me focus on one prompt and properly explore it in depth visually.

2. There are a few narratives in the pieces I made, a lot of the ones asking for us to tell a story were particularly narrative, but I found that working on the social rules sort of created a story about how I view the society we live in. I also really liked exploring series of one piece, the way I did with my butterfly work (my first zine) and creating panels that then showed some sort of progression.

3. I suppose the social rules work that I've been doing sends a message of the potential for societal chaos when we create our own rules and also when we are made to follow the restrictive rules posed by society. Thus creating a conflict between the average person and a governing social body. It's almost an endless flow of turmoil and disorder. A really enjoyed taking a very nihilistic take on this.

4. A lot of my work, particularly the work in the zine, did include text. I have fun doing text in different mediums to see how it would look. For example, the title on my zine, which was done in tea and created a lot of layered ripples and splashes -- it didn't like to stay in the lines. I also included a lot of simple handwritten messages to try to provoke ideas for certain pieces, such as the idea of "follow me", the way we all want to head in our own direction but inevitably end up following the general flow of society.

5. I liked a lot of elements in my work. I really enjoyed exploring the social rules in my zine and I could have chosen to do more with typography and explore thought-provoking messages. But I really enjoyed the exploration of nihilism, in the sense of rejecting religious moral authority and coming to a conclusion that our world is meaningless and without set rules. Therefore I'd like to further my ideas of ruined statues of angels and the way we abandon these old fashioned symbols of moral goodness.

6. My work feels like it fits in more with illustration, especially with the drawings and the way they present a story. But with the progressions in a story, there are ways in which I could adapt it to be an animation or include some sense of graphic design, particularly with the use of text. But for my final piece plan, I think it's best suited to illustration.
